An inexplicable kind of splendor and majesty and power and light. Go another way! Second, Moses and Elijah are present. And if we find it odd that the disciples kept mum about this then perhaps we can turn the camera around to ourselves to wonder how often we keep silent about the great and glorious truths of the Gospel that we celebrate in church on Sundays but then fail to mention in the week that follows. What is some significance for us today from these words here in Luke 9?? Talk to someone you trust about this. Moses and Elijah appeared in glory (v. 31). As we might expect, the glory of Yahweh filled the tabernacle and the temple (Exodus 40:34; 1 Kings 8:11). Maybe the sleepiness of the disciples is emblematic for how often they had missed the glory of Jesus when it shined right in front of them day in and day out throughout Jesus ministry. Jesus reproach says that the disciples failure is due to their own faithlessness and perversityimplying lack of faith. This moment had a huge impact on his faith, strengthening his confidence that Jesus truly was the Christ sent from heaven. They want to camp out with him on the mountain. And this is where Id like to end simply by saying that for us to celebrate the transfiguration of Jesus is to renew our commitment to him, to recognize him as the Son of God and the Lord and Savior of our lives. When you get a moment, take a close look in the mirror. And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was No sooner than he got down off the mountain, Jesus was met by a woman with a sick child, who begged for his mercy and healing kindness. His brilliance and majesty is so beyond us that we wont know what to do when confronted with him, and we will fall apart. Jesus answers that in the next verse. When we see God in all his glory, we will be shaken to the core. Action is both his strength and his weakness. As for the transfiguration of Jesus, it represents a turning point in his life: No longer would he continue his ministry in Galilee, his hour had come. The disciples were bewildered. God is not our Cosmic Buddy to whom we give the Bro handshake and hug. There is something so glorious about God and his kingdom that we will melt when confronted with it. Mark, the shortest Gospel, gives the most complete account of this exorcism. And besides, how would you explain this? Why should they have problems with this demon? It is also referred to in 2 Peter 1:18. The clearest example is his prayerful agony in the Garden of Gethsemane. They will fail to understand Jesus warning about his betrayal (9:43-45). Neither do Peter, John, or James offer an explanation. And if it seems odd to hear God the Father follow up this visual display with advice that has to do with listening and not looking, maybe thats because we, too, are often overly fixated on outward fame and power and glory as the world defines all those things and maybe that gets in the way of our truly listening to what Jesus says about humility and sacrifice and being servants of the lowest of the low in also our societies yet today. He says that Moses and Elijah were speaking of his departure, which he was about to accomplish in Jerusalem (9:31). Luke says, he intently set his face to go to Jerusalem. (9:51). Every time they respond to Jesus predictions about suffering with indifference or with actions that tug another direction, Jesus must surely have heard the tempters voice whispering into his ear, See, even your friends dont buy it! Our bodies will be glorious. What do we do with this? You fall to the ground trembling, your hair standing straight up. Listen to him! (v. 35). That chapter is all about the resurrection. For this section, compare Matt. Perhaps because Israel is the people of the Law and the Prophets, and Moses was the great lawgiver, and Elijah the great prophet. As we listen for Gods word in the sermon this morning, Id like for us to take a closer look at this second story the transfiguration of Jesus and, in particular, Id like for us to think about the radiance of God: What was it about being in the presence of God that was so apparent to the others the Israelites out in wilderness, the disciples up on Mount Herman?
